On Trend: Bold Red Lips

October 09, 2009 at 6:30 AM

Chanel1 The '80s trend dominating the fashion runways (shouler pads, anyone?) is also extending to makeup in the form of bold, shiny-slick red lips. To achieve this luxe lip, use Chanel's brand-new Rouge Allure Laque in Dragon ($32). This silky lip lacquer has the patent-leather shine of a gloss with the staying power of a color-saturated lipstick. Unlike the 1940s bold red lip with an understated eye, the '80s look is all about excess; pair with strong, defined cheek and a smoky eye with a hint of bright color at the lash line. Available at nordstrom.com.

About Face: Suki Organics' Pure Facial Moisture

October 07, 2009 at 6:30 AM

It can be a challenge for animal lovers to find 100 percent cruelty-free and animal-product-free beauty and skin care items. So they will be stoked to know that Suki Organics delivers excellent moisturizing oils that are completely vegan. Those prone to acne or breakouts should look into the bacteria-quelling qualities of Suki Pure Facial Moisture - Balancing ($30), a silky jojoba and grapeseed-oil based moisturizer. While it may seem counterintuitive to use oil to combat oily skin, the precision formulation works to mimic the body's naturally occurring oils, preventing oil glands from rocketing into overproduction. Chamomile and lavender extracts soothe the skin while echinacea boosts immune function. Clear skin, clear conscience! Available at sukipure.com.

Pretty Fabulous: OPI's Coleccion de Espana

October 02, 2009 at 6:30 AM

OPIEspana1

No need to travel abroad to channel a bit of Spanish romance. OPI will transport you there courtesy of its just-launched fall/winter nail lacquer collection, Coleccion de Espana ($8.50 per bottle), a spectrum of a dozen colors ranging from neutral nude (Barefoot in Barcelona) to a crisp crimson (Manicurist of Seville). As is OPI's signature, each comes with a cute name that reflects the theme of the collection, such as Conquistadorable Color (cheery pinkish red) and No Spain No Gain (deep berry). The most unusual hue of the collection is Here Today ... Aragon Tomorrow, a dark forest green that is truly unique, while our favorite for the fall months is definitely Suzi Skis in the Pyrenees, a shimmering bluish gray that will perfectly complement that cool-weather wardrobe. Olé! Available at amazon.com.

On Trend: MAC's Fall/Winter 2009 Nail Colors

September 29, 2009 at 6:30 AM

FallNail-NailLacquer-BeyondJealous-72

MAC Cosmetics has teamed with manicure maven Jin Soon to create an intriguing palette of nail lacquers for fall/winter 2009. Gone are basic fire-engine red or French tips, or the darkest hues that dominated last year's short nails. This season is about color—some surprising, but all ready for a good time. For Fun (vibrant violet) and Dance All Night (brick red) are in the better-known spectrum of nail colors. But Dry Martini (olive taupe), Rich, Dark, Delicious (amber brown) and Cool Reserve (grayish lilac) are intriguing tones that will complement fall fashion's neutral basics. Top marks go to Beyond Jealous, a smoky teal that demands to be noticed. Available at maccosmetics.com.
