A North Beach Pop-up Steps In to Rescue a Fire-Ravaged Block

Restaurateur Nick Floulis puts his plans on hold to help workers displaced by the March 17 blaze.


Nick Floulis was waiting for a delivery inside his soon-to-open North Beach restaurant, Lillie Coit’s, on St. Patrick’s Day when he saw wisps of smoke coming out of the three-story building diagonally across the street. By the time firefighters had contained the ensuing blaze, seven businesses—including the Salzburg, Rogue Ales Public House, Tuk Tuk Thai, Ferry Plaza Seafood, and Coit Liquor—faced a long, uncertain rebuild, and their 50-plus employees were left scrambling to find new gigs. “We took it personal,” Floulis says.

So he and his partners put their own plans on hold, and on April 19 they launched Doors Open, a pop-up in the eventual Lillie Coit’s space. For three months, the kitchen—helmed by the Salzburg’s Ramon Siewert—will serve dinner every night, plus weekend brunch. Displaced workers from the fire-ravaged businesses will be able to pick up shifts, and they’ll also receive 100 percent of the pop-up’s profits. The food and beverage offerings are inspired by the affected businesses: sausages and schnitzel from the Salzburg, a version of Rogue’s burger, cocktails made with spirits from Coit Liquor, raw oysters à la Ferry Plaza Seafood, and even a couple of Thai dishes. Floulis concedes that these aren’t foods you normally find all together in one restaurant. “But we think it’ll be very appreciated here.” 1707 Powell St. (Near Union St.)
