San Francisco magazine Wins A 2015 National Magazine Award

San Francisco Magazine’s June 2014 “Oakland Issue” Claims the
2015 National Magazine Award for Best Single-Topic Issue

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Feburary 4, 2015 – At an awards gala held on Monday night in New York City, the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) awarded San Francisco a prestigious National Magazine Award. The magazine’s June 2014 “Oakland Issue” was recognized as the best single-topic issue in the entire magazine industry in 2014. The award, which was bestowed by an esteemed panel of magazine editors, honors print magazines that have devoted an entire issue to the comprehensive examination of one subject. This is the second National Magazine Award ever granted to San Francisco magazine in its four-decade history; the previous win came in 2010 for General Excellence.

“I couldn’t be more ecstatic about the National Magazine Award win, which is a validation of all the tremendous work that went into the Oakland Issue,” said San Francisco editor-in-chief Jon Steinberg, who accepted the award on the magazine’s behalf. “The cherry on the top is that the nomination brings even more attention to a city that we’re incredibly proud of: Oakland!”

Indeed, the Oakland Issue was a first for San Francisco: Never before had the magazine devoted an entire issue to San Francisco’s neighbor to the east, taking the full measure of the limitless potential and colossal challenges that define Oakland today. “It’s just incredibly gratifying,” said Steinberg, “that our gamble in handing over an entire issue to our friends in Oakland paid off so spectacularly.”

In taking home the award, the magazine bested four much larger titles, all of them world renowned for their editorial content: New York, Bon Appetit, Bloomberg Businessweek, and Audobon. “Score one for the west coast, for Oakland, and for underdogs everywhere!,” cheered Steinberg.
