Training with the stars

Roll your eyes at the PR jargon—celebrities! gurus!—but the just-launched “experiences” designed by travel company Zozi are worth a look. The San Francisco–based company, which prides itself on helping people try something new (think sword fighting, crab fishing, a polo clinic, salsa), is taking outdoor adventure up a notch with full-day excursions led by top athletes. You can shoot the Truckee River with world-renowned kayaker Tao Berman, see African wildlife in Santa Rosa through the eyes  of National Geographic explorer Mireya Mayor, and shred the Sierra’s powdery slopes alongside Olympian Jonny Moseley. The current lineup also includes Bay Area überathlete Dean Karnazes (pictured here), the extreme runner known as the “fittest man on the planet,” and Chris Lieto, a professional Ironman triathlete. Hands-on instruction, combined with a few hours of whooping it up with your pro, followed by drinks and dinner, elevate these small-group outings (15 people max) from a how-to clinic to a fun and pretty darn rewarding day.
